Experimental Theatre Yue Opera - The Destiny of Rebirth

Three hundred years ago, Chen Duansheng, the author of The Destiny of Rebirth (Zai Sheng Yuan), wrote a heroine Meng Lijun who was ahead of the times but could not break through the shackles of tradition. Then she stopped writing, leaving the story unfinished. Today, the adapted story gives more meanings to the heroine. With life billows, Meng Lijun becomes a woman who pursuits equality and freedom. Meanwhile, she is quite clear that from the viewpoint of the worldly eyes, marriage is the only way for females to be happy. Even though women are as talented as men, they often feel helpless trying to fulfill their dreams against the reality. We hope that after "rebirth" of Meng Lijun, her ‘free mind will provoke more self-reflection and compassion against women of the modern society. Xin YaqinXin Yaqin, a national second-grade actress of Yue Opera, graduated from the Traditional Opera School of Shanghai Theatre Academy, has been employed in Honglou Troupe of Shanghai Yue Opera House. She is a part of the opera school of Wang Wenjuan, and studied from Wang Wenjuan, Lv Ruiying and Shan Yangping who are among the great actresses of Yue Opera in different times. She has starred in many full-scale classic dramas and highlights of Yue Opera, such as A Dream in Red Mansions, The Crap Fairy, Meng Lijun, Beauty Yuji, The Purple Hairpin, A Girl Jiujin and The Unforgettable Encounter. She has also participated in the "Stage Sisterhood Gala", the 70th anniversary of Yue Opera reforms, the 50th anniversary of the Yue Opera A Dream in Red Mansions, the performance "Qian Li Gong Chan Juan" Gala for Wang Wenjuans art, the performance "Yi Dai Feng Hua" Gala for Xu Yulans art, the closing ceremony performance of the 2nd Yue Opera Festiva; and the lantern gala organized by 15 provinces. She won the Top 10 Actress Award of the 2nd Yue Opera Actress Competition in 2009, and won the silver award with Shan Hanghang as the duo "Star Route". Zhou QianZhou Qian, holding the Masters of Arts degree, graduated from the Department of Drama and Literature of Shanghai Theatre Academy. She has been employed as the Lecturer in the Department of Drama, Artistic Vocational College of Anhui. Her script of the microfilm Password won the third-class prize in the first "Yangtze River Delta Micro Film Contest" in 2014. Her drama script Voting in the Village participated in the 3rd China Campus Drama Festival. She wrote the online movie Crazy Beauty produced by Fangquan Pictures, and wrote a childrens magic show Adventure of Miaomiao in Harrys Magic Castle for Anhui Performing Arts Group Corporation. She has frequently been the writer for large-scale comprehensive performances within the province.

Drama - Hot Pot

The story is about the flashbacks of Bi Dayou (old B)s lifetime memory, a hotpot restaurant owner at the last moment of his life. Looking at the guests he encountered in the hot pot restaurant is like seeing his own life. The young couple reminded the old B of his youth, while the middle-aged poor couple took him back to his failed marriage. No matter how successful or how hard a persons life was, there should be countless memories of himself. In a sense, the fragments of these memories constitute his entire life. Guests in the hot pot restaurant are pieces of a noisy real life. And these pieces collide with old Bs life experience with sparks. Then, the story goes into these sparks which connect old Bs important slices of life together. It turns out all those guests in the hot pot restaurant are with old B in different ages. Finally, the story goes back to the current, those guests are still guests, but old B already left. We try to go deep into the trivial pieces of life and show the essence of the joys and sorrows in life through a nobodys various feelings. The work itself cannot give an answer, but it is intended to show and explore. Guan BoGuan Bo graduated in 1996 from the Central Academy of Drama, with a Masters of Arts degree in Dramatic Literature and Directing. He is the deputy director of the Production Department and the team leader of the Drama Actor Team of the National Centre for the Performing Arts. As a producer, screenwriter and director, Guan has been engaged in arts production and management for years. His main productions include Turandot, Carmen, The Chinese Orphan, La Traviata, Red Cliff, Jane Eyre, Massage, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, Midsummer Nights Dream, King Lear, etc. He is the playwright of TV drama Judge Dee, Liu Yong, Meng Lijun, Waters Edge, the Chinese version of the operetta Die Fledermaus, play So Young, and musical The South Wind. Guan has also worked as a director in drama sketch Beyond the Time, drama A Pound of Flesh and the Fifth Anniversary Party of NCPA. Zha WenyuanPh.D. candidate in directing, The Central Academy of Drama MA in directing, The Central Academy of Drama. Her works, delicate whilst wild, subtle but full of courage, outline an eternal emotional life with unique stage language. Major works: Executive director of musical Romeo and Juliet, Deputy Director of drama Mao Yisheng, Director of Experimental Drama Da Zai Zhong Sheng, Director of musical Late Spring, Director of Shakespeares Twelfth Night, Deputy Director of Shakespeares Hamlet (Beijing Comedy version), Rehearsal Director of Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream (the National Centre for the Performing Arts version and the Beijing Comedy version).

Physical Theatre《La Famille Frapelini》

One table, four stools, a bit of snow, three characters with plenty of imagination and you enter the extraordinary world of the Frapelinis ! And if you see ‘Popa, tell him that the whole world is looking for him! Terrifying at first, the world will come to amaze Bo and Bidou, and Ma keeps smiling as if everything is fine. On their journey, they will discover that the ‘Other is not dangerous, and that on a detour down an unknown road, there always remains a bit of ones self. The Frapelinis therefore take to the road – the audience with them - tracking a vanished father, leaving behind the tree of dreams, rationing a few morsels of food and discovering unknown lands.

French One Act Play 《Two little boxes》

Men! What are they like?! A and J are two brand new male humans, growing up side by side. With no real identity, there is everything to play for. Their new heads and empty bodies are ready to be filled with experiences and worldly knowledge, and if we look closely, we will see two new men being formed. Two Little Boxes is a highly physical, and often interactive piece of physical theatre, which knits together mime, dance, theatre, music and film. In a world where the only thing that speaks is the body, audiences may recognise the journey of A and J as a reflection of their own lives. It is a story of human social development, the insecurity of youth, the desire to fit in, the crisis of identity, the frustrations of relationships, and with all this: the construction of gender identity.

An Amazing Spring Dream

Lan Tianyu the renowned geisha married Qian Pengzhi the widower and lived a rich and glorious life when Qian was impressed by Lan Tianyu for her playing An Amazing Spring Dream, a dramatic scene in the famous Kun opera entitled the Peony Pavilion. Although General Qian at the age of her grandfather gave all the favors to her, how could her emotional emptiness be filled up? Finally it went just like the predication that she got a wrong bone. Mercifully, she was widowed at a very young age, and her love and youth became just the grave objects of Qian Pengzhi. Nothing lasts forever and life is just like a dream. When Mrs. Qian was awakened from a dream, she found she was penniless, and could not even keep pace with the times. And her past glories and wealth were just past memories that could never return. Looking back upon the past, everything was like a dream, seemingly having no trace, but haunting everywhere. The dream ended, everything woke up….

In 1890, the Belgian playwright Maeterlinck created <the blind> , depicting a group of blind people waiting for salvation on a desert island, in themidst of a wild and primitive forest. The priest who had led them was dead, but they were still in the infatuation waiting for him to rescue them.As a classic of symbolism drama, this play desalt drama conflicts, focusing on the creation of a thriller atmosphere and mysterious situation, metaphorical and revealing the spiritual reality of the western world at that time. Although more than a hundred years apart, we have revisited todays world, and can also be inspired by this play. This time were going to reinterpret the original work by creating an interactive and immersive experience. We have no intention to copy the form of traditional stage presentation, but leave the audience and actors in an equality drama environment - a real desert island. In the resetting of the media and the senses, explore the new dramatic effect and restart the thought of the present reality.In this play, the audience will feel an unprecedented sense of hearing.

Contemporary Ballet

The production takes GROWING as the theme demonstrating the complicated and delicate feelings of the main character who would love to say goodbye to the past through the contemporary vocabulary. A lot of inspiration and details in the production are from the real life of the choreographer. He tries to mix his understanding of life into the melody of classical music. When the evening turns dark, when the light fades away, when the time goes by, a lonely man drowns in his own memories. A lonely light gently stands by the dock of the unknown world. If he turns off the light, he will be lost in the dark. But if he doesnt, he will be trapped here forever. What to do? He doesnt know.We all need to let go the past we created in order to move on. We all need to face the mistakes we made in order to grow up.

Lovely Ghost

A woman often quarrels with her boyfriend over trivial matters. One day, after a heated argument, she dies suddenly and is brought to heaven by an angel. However, as she is not convinced of her death, the angel brings her back to earth to prove it and for her to see her boyfriend for the last time. Meanwhile, her boyfriend is devastated over her death and misses her greatly. She hangs around him and communicates with him via a harmonica. Finally, she parts with him, regretting that she has not treasured their time together while alive.

New media theater

As for the overall structure, the theater consists of five works, each is an independent miniature with different forms, ultimately aimed to explore how new media concepts and technical characteristics promote the development or reform of traditional plays, dnace-drama and musical operas in terms of artistic concepts and languages, thus creatng a new theater of media that reforms, in a sense, the traditional dramatic forms. As for the performance content, the works of the theater lay stress on re-interpreting traditional Chinese culture and creation myths with the modern writing ideas and techniques used in music, media and drama, looking forward to unearthing the connotations and spirit of the traditional Chinese culture and creation myths in the contemporary context by way of a new theater of media. The theater is a creative and synergic effort of numerous artists from various well-reputed universities, including the School of Digital Media of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, School of Digital Media and the School of Digital Media of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Shanghai Institute of Design of Chinese Academy of Arts, the Department of Digital Media of XiAn Conservatory of Music, and the Department of Digital Media of Sichuan Conservatory of Music. Resorting to new concepts and techniques of media, Duanjun Stage was creatively modified and in combination with unique music structure and languages, five independent miniature works, including new indoor operas of media like KuaFu Chases after the Sun and the Bird Jingwei Trying to Fill the Sea, and new media opera of Qiang Nationality like You Are My Mountain.

Shanghai Theatre Academy Original Musical Drama《My Name is Lu Xiaochuan》

The original modern musical "I Am Lu Xiaochuan" resorted to the dramatic stage, on the one hand, and on the other, it integrated many comedy elements of the northern and southern disciplines and, contrary to traditional musical styles, bravely used the jukebox music so that a feeling of nostalgia, empathy and familiarity ran through the entire musical story line and tunes. The uniquely representative old-time music went in harmony with the dance steps, reminiscent of past loving memories. Moreover, the audience could experience love, find love and whats more, want to love after reading through LU Xiaochuans wisecracking and dramatic stories about love and struggle for survival&hellip;. "I am Lu Xiaochuan" tells the story of Lu Xiaochuan who experienced a failed love. After that, he believed in no love, but money. He chose to give up even when he met with a girl with true love and he even tried to mislead the girl in his wrong ideas. Later he woke up, only finding that everything seemed too late&hellip;. The completely unconventional modern story will entreat you with a familiar musical experience. Dozens of soul-shocking classic songs about life and love will arouse your affection to interact. Meticulously compiled dances combined with brilliant interpretation of actors will entertain you with a lingering audio and visual feast.

Maiden Lindi grew up in a single parent family, Wan Bai was her never-met half-brother, and to see Wan Bai became her dream. But her mother forbade her to contact her schizophrenic father. So, she had to ask her schoolmate Pengcheng to collect her fathers letters on her behalf, hence bringing the two closer and closer to each other. The remarriage decision of Lindis mother broke their original life and her stepfather brought his son Yuan Jie to live with them. Life changed and the contradiction between the two children heated up. By chance, Yuan Jie found Lindis secret of letters and Lindi yielded to Yan Jies threat and lost her first kiss. Pengcheng was planning to bare his heart to his childhood sweetheart. But Yuan Jie distorted the facts in front of Pengcheng, defaming Lindi as an indecent girl. Pengcheng, now bereft of reason, raped Lindi after a fierce quarrel with Lindi. In despair, Lindi opened his fathers last letter, only finding that Wan Bai didnt even know the existence of her sister&hellip;.

Dance

Body swings like a narrow stream and rushes like a broad river. Between them, dancers are nearly drowned in their sweat, as the longest day of body is reflected in the simmering waters of the meandering rivers. Long River, WCdances production in 2014, marks the transformation of the dance company, as explained by Wenchung Lin that I want to return to bigger venues, although thats where I came from &ndash; after spending some time doing works for smaller venues, how to pack it up and bring it back is what I have been thinking about.

Vertebra Theatre works

Vertebra Theatre works with director Fu Hong-Zheng to produce physical theatre Fight Me Now in mainland China. It is based on 1:0 , one of his masterpieces in physical aesthetics and part of M.O.V.E. Theatres Sport Series. Fight Me Now is like a sports show combining ping pong, basketball, baseball, football. Such a mixture creates a refreshing sense of humor. Pure physical movements creates a unique sense tension on the stage. Actors are not just throwing balls to each other on the stage, but &lsquo;throwing their language as well. The show is sometimes relaxing, sometimes violent and dark, sometimes peaceful yet sometimes hysteric. Weakening the role of story and language, physical theatre Fight Me Now puts an emphasis on the creation of situation and physical expression. Sports is used to explore career, family and love - the essential things in life. It also reexamines the dominant male image of being strong and powerful in the Chinese society. People nowadays do not understand the power of softness and the perseverance of humanity. In the face of conflicts they tend to control others, which generates some twisted power. We should all think of more ways to treat our lives.

Drama Mo Fei

The play is an adaptation of Tiesheng Shis About a Play Which Uses a Film as Its Backdrop. The setting is a movie screen, and the main character is a daydreaming alcoholic. The story is narrated by this drunkard who, as intoxicated as he may be, is able to discern society more clearly than the rest of us. And hidden deep in monologues of the drunkard are illusions, dreams, and the provocative truth. With the aid of alcohol, he is able to return to the past: to witness the hollow marriage of his parents which gave birth to him, to speak with his innocent former self and warn that boy about the dangers of desire, to touch once again the hand of his ex-wife&hellip; With the aid of alcohol, he is also able to travel into the future: to observe desolate cities and the last remnant of humanity, to visit his estranged family, and to learn of his own fate &ndash; that he will only be found seven days after his death.
